Global Boiler Services targets FPSO repair projects

FPSO boiler repairs remain a niche market, where compliance, delivery reliability and offshore execution outweigh volume. For Global Boiler Services, the FPSO segment represents a niche market where experience, compliance and delivery reliability matter more than scale.

From its Singapore hub, Global Boiler Services is positioning itself for selected FPSO repair and retrofit projects, drawing on a global setup that combines Asian fabrication capacity with offshore execution and direct customer engagement.

While FPSO projects represent a new commercial focus, Global Boiler Services brings decades of accumulated boiler repair experience into the segment. Since its establishment in 2011, the company has completed more than 1,000 boiler repairs worldwide across marine, LNG and offshore assets.

“FPSO is a new market for us, and it is a niche market. While the vessel type is different, the underlying boiler repair work is well within our core experience, built up over decades on other ship segments. FPSO projects typically involve large repair projects, often as full packages, and the contracts are significant,” says Troels Larsen, Managing Director, Global Boiler Services Singapore.

Planned repairs, not routine work

FPSO boiler repairs differ from conventional marine boiler work. Assets remain in operation, access is restricted, and shutdown windows are limited. In many cases, repairs must be carried out offshore while production continues.

“This is not going to be our bread and butter. FPSOs are out on the field all the time. You normally have two boilers, and the system keeps running while repairs are carried out,” says Troels Larsen.

The technical scope is substantial. A single boiler can be up to 15 metres high with a footprint of around ten by ten metres. Repairs are typically executed inside pressurised chambers designed to eliminate ignition risks.

“You need to create a pressure environment where there is no risk of sparks or ignition. That requires planning, documentation and people who know exactly what they are doing,” he says.

In practice, FPSO boiler repairs draw on the same disciplines Global Boiler Services applies across other complex vessel types, with the key difference being access, planning horizons and offshore execution.

Singapore as operational hub

Global Boiler Services’ Singapore operation plays a central role in FPSO projects, acting as a decision-making and coordination hub. Fabrication work is typically carried out in Global Boiler Service Dubai factory or in China, while Global Boiler Services’ own specialists execute the repairs offshore.

“In a typical FPSO repair project, we might have ten of our people onboard for up to 50 days. We control the schedule, and we follow it,” says Troels Larsen.

The Singapore setup allows for short decision lines and direct customer dialogue, which is critical in a market where timing and trust are decisive.

“We have short delivery times and direct contact with the customer. That matters in this segment,” he says.

Compliance and documentation as differentiators

In FPSO boiler repairs, compliance is not optional. All work must meet strict class requirements, and documentation is as important as execution.

“When we carry out work, everything is class approved. Our welders and boilermakers are pre-approved, and all inspections and measurements are documented,” says Troels Larsen.

Global Boiler Services is typically involved from the inspection phase. Planned inspection visits are carried out together with the customer, including ultrasonic measurements and pressure-side assessments.

“We have specialists who inspect the pressure side of the boiler, and we also look at how to optimise performance. That includes making the boiler greener by improving combustion efficiency and flame performance,” he explains.

Working with Global Boiler Services typically includes inspection, pressure-part repairs, automation and performance optimisation. This allows FPSO operators to work with a single contractor across disciplines.

Price, speed and credibility

Competition in the FPSO segment is intense, and pricing is always a key factor. But according to Troels Larsen, price alone does not win projects.  “It is about price, delivery time and speed onsite. But it is also about credibility. We must stand by what we say,” he says.

FPSO projects often involve long sales cycles and delayed revenue recognition. A project secured in November may not be invoiced until many months later.  “That is the reality of this market. You need patience, and you need to be realistic,” says Troels Larsen.

Relationships over marketing

Global Boiler Services’ FPSO engagement is built on industry relationships rather than broad marketing efforts. The company leverages its track record from steam turbines, LNG carriers and offshore boiler repairs.  “This is a small industry. Everybody knows each other. We present what we have done before, and we build trust through delivery,” says Troels Larsen.

The company estimates that around one hundred FPSOs are relevant to its scope globally. The ambition is to be registered with five FPSO operators in the near term. Today, Global Boiler Services is approved by two.

One group mindset in Singapore

Singapore also reflects G&O Maritime Group’s one-group approach. Global Boiler Services operates alongside other G&O brands, including HJ Lubricators, which has recently moved into the same Singapore location. Global Boiler Service is already handling refractory service for Atlas Incinerators, and more brands service are expected to be handled by Singapore team in 2026.

“We already see synergies with Atlas, and we are receiving offshore repair enquiries that involve multiple competencies. HJ Lubricators is also here with us now. We have two brands in Singapore,” says Troels Larsen.

The integrated setup supports G&O Maritime Services’ broader ambition to deliver coordinated solutions across brands and disciplines.

“The one-group mindset works well. We just need to get used to it – but it is clearly the right direction,” he concludes.
