IRIS inspection

At Global Boiler Services, we offer advanced tube inspection services using the Internal Rotary Inspection System (IRIS) – an ultrasonic testing method that delivers wall thickness measurements with up to 0.1 mm accuracy. This high-precision technology enables early detection of corrosion, erosion, and other defects, helping you maintain safe and efficient boiler operation. 

How IRIS works 

• Water Couplant – IRIS requires tubes to be flooded with water before testing to transmit ultrasonic waves effectively. 

• Ultrasonic Pulse Generation – A transducer sends an ultrasonic pulse along the tube’s axis. 

• Rotating Mirror – Powered by a small turbine driven by water pressure, the mirror directs the ultrasonic wave into the tube wall. 

• Wave Reflection Analysis – By measuring the time difference between echoes from the tube’s inner and outer walls, the system calculates wall thickness. 

• Helical Scan Path – As the probe moves through the tube, the rotating mirror creates a complete 360° scan for full coverage. 

• Centering Devices – Special mounts ensure the probe stays centred, avoiding distorted images and ensuring measurement accuracy. 
  

This method can even produce a 3D profile of detected defects, showing their shape and depth for a detailed assessment.
