Case: Extending the life of a marine incinerator through expert refractory renewal
When a vessel’s waste management system is compromised, it can quickly become both an operational and compliance challenge. Recently, Global Boiler Services completed a full refractory renewal on a Hyundai-Atlas MAXI 1500SL WS marine incinerator, ensuring the unit was restored to full operational efficiency and IMO compliance, without the need for complete replacement.
The challenge
During a scheduled inspection in Singapore, significant damage to the refractory lining inside the vessel’s incinerator was identified. Cracks in the walls, worn anchors, and degraded insulation threatened both combustion efficiency and structural integrity. Left unresolved, this could have led to reduced waste processing capacity, higher fuel consumption, and potential off-hire due to environmental non-compliance.

The scope of work
Our service team, including specialists from our European team and extra manpower from our GBS Singapore team, carried out an extensive renewal programme covering:
- Removal of all damaged refractory materials from the primary and secondary chambers, including partition and sluice walls.
- Repair of structural cracks by welding reinforced double plates at vulnerable corners.
- Replacement of worn anchors and installation of new high-grade insulation.
- Fabrication and installation of new steel plates to strengthen the mixing chamber and door frames.
- Application of new heat-resistant refractory throughout all chambers, doors, and the combustion floor, including precise formwork and controlled curing.
- Cutting of expansion joints to protect against future thermal stress.
This meticulous process was carried out over several days, often requiring manual transport of materials in challenging conditions, a testament to the dedication and skill of the service team.

The result
The incinerator was fully restored, with all chambers re-lined and reinforced for optimal performance. This ensures:
- Extended service life of the incinerator without full replacement costs.
- Improved operational efficiency through optimal combustion conditions.
- Full compliance with IMO MARPOL Annex VI regulations.
- Minimised off-hire risk thanks to swift turnaround and expert workmanship.
The vessel can now continue to process both sludge oil and garbage efficiently, reducing dependency on port waste services and maintaining operational independence at sea.
